CHALAZION EXCISION - AFTER CARE INSTRUCTIONS
1. APPLY A COLD PACK TO THE EYELID intermittently for the rest of the day to help decrease swelling and bruising.
2. PICK UP THE ANTIBIOTIC-STEROID EYE DROP from your pharmacy.
· Instill 1 drop 2-4 times a day to the eye of the affected eyelid for 1 WEEK
· PLEASE NOTE: Steroid medication to the eye can increase eye pressure in some patients. Because of this, please do not use the eye drop or ointment for more than 2 week intervals without getting your eye pressure checked by an eye doctor
3. Tomorrow evening or when your eyelid feels more comfortable, PLEASE RESUME WARM COMPRESSES NIGHTLY TO THE AFFECTED EYELID(S) for 1 week to promote good oil flow.
· Run a washcloth under hot water to get it as hot as possible without burning the skin. Another option is to fill a clean sock with uncooked rice grains and microwave that for about 1 minute to create a hot heating pad.
· Then, DEEPLY massage the affected eyelid(s) with the warm washcloth/sock/heating pad.
· The heat will open up the pores on the eyelid margin and deeply massaging the lids will help push out any debris that is causing congestion of the eyelid pores.
· Start warm compresses tonight and do them for 5-10 minutes every day for at least 1 week.
4. Use of a HYPOCHLOROUS ACID SPRAY 1-2x/day is helpful in preventing blepharitis and styes/chalazion. The brand we recommend is called Prequel which can be found on their website, Target, or Amazon. https://a.co/d/fEJ9Js8

A FEW THINGS TO NOTE AFTER THE PROCEDURE:
· Bruising of the affected lid may occur and usually resolves within 3-7 days
· Swelling of the eyelid may take up to 2 weeks to resolve.
· You may have blood-tinged tears for the next 2 days.
· If there is active oozing of blood, this is coming from under the eyelid where the incision was made. Please use a tissue or washcloth to apply pressure to the closed eyelid for 5 minutes to promote clotting and stop bleeding.
· If you have mild tenderness after the procedure, you can take Tylenol for pain relief.
· A staff member from the eye clinic will call you about 2 weeks after your procedure to make sure you are healing well. However, if you are having any issues with pain or the bump is getting more red, swollen, or tender after the procedure, please text or call us at 615-905-6797.
TO PREVENT NEW BUMPS, WE RECOMMEND THE FOLLOWING:
· Do warm compresses to the eyelids on a daily or weekly basis
· USE OCuSOFT or other brands of eyelid scrubs on a daily or weekly basis.
· After doing warm compresses, the eyelid pores should be more dilated and open. To do a deeper cleaning, you can use over-the-counter eyelid scrubs on the lashes. Please close your eyes when doing this.
· We recommend lid scrubs containing the active ingredient Tea Tree Oil which has antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties
IF YOU GET A NEW BUMP, WE RECOMMEND THE FOLLOWING:
· Continue warm compresses (as stated above) as frequently as possible.
· If you have any remaining antibiotic-steroid eye drop or ointment, you can use it as stated above.
· If the bump becomes hard or lasts longer than 2-4 weeks, you may need to have it surgically drained.
